Mahoney was elected to Florida’s 16th District in Congress two years ago. He replaced Congressman Mark Foley, who resigned just prior to the election after it was revealed he was exchanging lewd Internet messages with Congressional pages.
In ads run during his 2006 bid for Congress, Mahoney’s campaign stated: "Congress is a mess. Corruption. Waste. Incompetence. Tim Mahoney is a common sense businessman who believes in faith, family and personal responsibility.”
Mahoney is currently facing a challenge from Republican Tom Rooney, whose family owns the Pittsburgh Steelers, for his Congressional seat.
According to the ABC story, senior Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), the chair of the Democratic Caucus, have been working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign.
